Boutros Al Maari is a Syrian artist whose work is deeply rooted in the visual and social memory of Damascus. Trained in printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Damascus (1991), he later earned a PhD in Social Anthropology from EHESS, Paris.
His imagery often draws from the souks and cafés of the region, with recurring motifs such as the tarbouche and narghile, reflecting folk and traditional life. Al Maari’s richly detailed compositions are instantly recognizable.
His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major collections including the Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris), Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, and has recently been sold at Christie’s.
